Fontfroide Abbey
One of the largest in France. Aymeric II chose this site in 1093, near a cold-water stream. ''Fons frigida = cold spring, from which its name derives.
During the Albigensian Crusade, it was the spearhead of Catholic orthodoxy. In the 14th century, one of its abbots, Jacques Fournier, was elected Pope under the name Benedict XII. The abbey was listed as a historic monument in 1862.
